Transformation Through Support: Reintegration Success in Costa Rica

At the heart of our mission is the commitment to supporting women in their journey towards reintegration and independence. Today, we’re delighted to bring you a powerful story of resilience and renewal from our program in Costa Rica.

Introducing "Rebecca," who at 64 years old, exemplifies the spirit of empowerment that we strive to foster. For almost 50 years, starting at just 17, Rebecca was trafficked throughout Latin America, enduring unimaginable hardships, and surviving decades of exploitation. Her resilience led her to Costa Rica’s Red Zone, where survival prostitution was her only known means of livelihood.

As we’ve shared before, distance from a trafficker does not equal freedom and many women engage in survival sex as their only means of supporting themselves and their families.

Rebecca’s transformative journey began when she joined Free The Girls, not just through our bra-selling initiative but through the comprehensive reintegration services we provide. These services include skills training, psychological support, and community engagement—all vital in helping her forge a new path. Since her involvement, Rebecca has sold over 150 bras and is now an integral part of her community. She is giving back to the day center by voluntarily cleaning and organizing, participating in weekly activities, and supporting the other women. Being a part of a community like this is something FTG fosters and that Rebecca longed for but couldn’t engage in because she had to be on the streets for 10-12 hours every day in order to make ends meet.

Her goal is to own a car so she can deliver goods and expand her sales business. Her dream is to motivate, inspire, and help other women find dignified employment and a path to true freedom.

How You Can Help

In order to continue providing a sanctuary where women like Rebecca can thrive and dream for a future, we need your help. We are currently seeking support to rent a new day center space outside of the Red Zone. By contributing, you ensure that women like Rebecca have a chance to build their businesses and reclaim their independence in a supportive community setting.

Your support not only changes lives but also fuels the ongoing fight against trafficking and exploitation. Together, we can create a world where all women have the opportunity to live free and fulfill their dreams.
