Jon Snyder, from Free The Girls partner program Mission To El Salvador, teaching a finance class to the women in our El Salvador program.
She grew up in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in El Salvador where gangs rule with violence and fear. As a teenager, she was exploited by one of the gangs who forced her into prostitution for their own gain. Escape from the gang’s control was not only difficult, but seemingly more dangerous that staying. The threats on her life, and her family members’ lives, was real.
Today, Marta is 20 years old. After escaping the gang’s control, she struggled with the responsibility of earning her own living while trying to also provide for her four younger siblings. In September, she joined Free The Girls program in El Salvador. Marta came to the program eager for the opportunity to learn how to build a small business, and make it last. She is a hard worker with a strong determination to succeed.
In December, Marta attended a finance class at the Mission To El Salvador community center to learn how to make a budget. For the first time in her life, she wrote down goals for the future and began to develop a plan to reach those goals.
Marta has quickly become one of the best bra sellers in the program. Because of Free The Girls, she is able to make a living wage and provide for her siblings as well.
Thank you so much for your support of Free The Girls, you are giving women like Marta the chance to plan, to dream, and to make 2015 a great year.
