In-country program staff person, Evelyn, sorting bras for the Free The Girls program through Mission To El Salvador
When our partners at Mission to El Salvador (MTES) started a Free The Girls pilot project last year to provide economic empowerment to women rescued from sex trafficking, they hoped to help a half dozen women establish micro enterprises selling bras in the second-hand clothing markets. The pilot project quickly took root and has exceeded all expectations. Today there are 12 women in the El Salvador program actively selling bras!
This spring, Free The Girls will be sending out another shipment of bras to El Salvador. “We keep in contact with our program partners like MTES to make sure they never run out of bras. We just sent a container to Mozambique in December for that very reason,” Free The Girls Inventory Manager Pam Gumns explains, “Now we are preparing to do the same for El Salvador and are asking Free The Girls supporters who have been thinking about sending in bras to do it now, in March, so the shipment to El Salvador won’t be delayed.”
International Program Manager Josh Broward got a first-hand look at the El Salvador program in January. “I was encouraged by all that I saw in San Salvador. The women are thriving in the Free The Girls program and were passionate in the gratitude they expressed about being offered the opportunity to own their own businesses. I was heartened by the potential for growth to help more women.”
To send in those bras you never wear, simply put them in a large envelope or box, and address them to our collection center at:

If you want to hold a bra drive, we will assign a volunteer event concierge to help answer all your questions, and even promote public events on our website and social media. Download resources and register your event online.
Of course, the most direct way to help Free The Girls is to make a monetary donation. It costs over $5,000 to send a container of bras to El Salvador. Your donation will help us pay those costs. And, because we are a 501(c)3 organization, your donation is 100% tax deductible. Make your donation online today using our secure PayPal donation form.
Finally, supporters in the Chicago/Northern Indiana region are invited to take part in an upcoming “packing party” where volunteers will be sorting and packing bras, and preparing pallets for shipping bras internationally to El Salvador. For information on upcoming packing party dates and times, please email Pam at firstname.lastname@example.org
