Roberta A: Why I Volunteer
Free The Girls bra collection center in Indiana runs on the support of its many dedicated volunteers.
When we moved inventory operations to Duneland Community Church in Chesterton, Indiana in 2012, Roberta A was one of our original volunteers at DCC. She contributes in so many ways, it is hard to list them. In fact, it is hard to find a picture of her where she isn’t in profile as she is usually busy doing something.
As a member of Free The Girls DCC Leadership Team, she helps plan and execute our bra packing parties and serves as an official representative of Free The Girls at community events.
Most days, however, you’ll find Roberta helping with the receiving and stacking the boxes of bras as they arrive throughout the day from the U.S. Mail, U.P.S., Fed Ex, and DHL–a process she describes as “Tetris.” When it’s time for a truck to be loaded with boxes, she is always there ready to help. Shrink wrapping the pallets of boxes for shipping is another of her many talents. And, if you stop by DCC to drop off some bras, chances are it will be Roberta’s smiling face that greets you as you walk through the doors.
In her own words, Roberta says, “I volunteer because it makes me feel good knowing that I can help change lives in the name of Jesus.”
Roberta works in the office of Duneland Community Church. She lives in Chesterton, Indiana with her husband, daughter and son. Roberta’s whole family is involved with volunteering, and they often encourage others to come to Free The Girls events at DCC. Her oldest son lives in Texas.
Free The Girls is pleased to celebrate National Volunteer Week by highlighting some of our active volunteers and their reasons for volunteering. As you may know, Free The Girls only has five part-time employees, all of whom work from home on their own computers. Likewise, our volunteer base of almost 100 people across the United States work out of their homes, churches, and schools to help us fulfill our mission to provide economic empowerment to survivors of sex trafficking.
